Hematology is the branch of medicine that deals with blood diseases and cancers, such as sickle-cell anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and hemophilia. The physiology, pathology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of blood-related illnesses are all covered under the internal medicine subspecialty of hematology. Hematologists may identify abnormalities in platelet counts or blood counts by concentrating mostly on lymphatic systems and bone marrow. Hematologists treat lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, and lymphoid tissue—organs that get blood cell nourishment. White blood cells, also produced in the bone marrow and referred to as leukocytes or WBCs, aid in the fight against infection. They comprise less than 1% of whole blood, together with platelets.
